Fathers with Sole Custody

Marriage and parenthood work differently today than they did in the recent past. Now that just as many women are in the workplace as men, there are fewer stay-at-home mothers. This freedom also means that a wife and her husband need not be stuck in a damaged relationship forever. In the past, it was most common for mothers to maintain sole custody of their children after a divorce. Today, however, it is increasingly common for fathers to have custody of their children.

There is a perception that men cannot be good caretakers, and that only a mother can raise children. This does fatherhood a great disfavor, however. Even forty years ago it was not unheard of for a husband to take sole custody of his children because their mother was unfit to care for them. For example, a mother with a history of abuse or alcoholism may not be able to provide a safe environment for her children.

Today it is more common for men to have sole custody even though the children's mother is well, simply because the father is in a better position to care for them. A mother with a busy, stressful career and little time at home may not have the time to devote to childrearing that their father has. This is only one example of an instance in which a father may be able to provide a better, more stable lifestyle for his children following a divorce.
