Know Your Adoption Options

If you are looking to bring a new person into your home, adoption is a wonderful way to provide a child with a family. For people who choose domestic adoptions, you have several different options for going about the adoption process.

Here in the United States, most adoption agencies give you three different methods for finding a child for your family. These are open, closed, and semi-open adoptions. Both the birth parents and the adoptive parents have a choice in what type of adoption they want for their child.

Open Adoptions

While there are varying levels of these adoptions, open adoptions typically involve the birth and adoptive parents meeting before the child is born, and sometimes staying in contact after the exchange. Very open adoptions can include the birth parents getting to meet with the child periodically, or it may just be the adoptive parents sending the blood parents photos and letters every now and then.

Closed Adoptions

Although they are not used as much now, closed adoptions were once the primary way to give up a child. With these, the birth parents and adoptive parents do not know each other at all, and the process is done by a mediator.

Semi-Open Adoptions

As the name implies, these processes are between open and closed adoptions. Normally, the two sets of parents will know each other's names, and perhaps the phone numbers, but not the city of residence or anything detailed. Sometimes, parents may choose to meet prior to the tradeoff, but not after. The adoptive family may choose to provide pictures or letters of the child, but these are sent to the birth parents via a third party.
