Visitation Rights for Fathers
Getting divorced is difficult for you, your spouse, and your children. If you are the father in a divorce case, more likely than not, you will not be given custody of your children, this is just how our legal system works. If you are lucky, you may be given visitation rights that will allow you to visit your children for small amounts of time, sometimes a weekend, sometimes just an afternoon. For a good father, this is almost unbearable and for the children it can be quite damaging.
There has been much scientific research that studies the affect of divorce on children, specifically how the relationship with their father after the divorce takes place.
Firstly, many studies have found that most parents want to move away from each other to start a new life. This means that the children are separated from one parent for most of the time. While this may not seem like a huge revelation, the fact is that many things change once parent and children move away from each other.
For example, most families gave their children around $6000 for college, but when one parent is further removed, that number drops to around $4000. The scores that children received on tests also follow this correlation, dropping significantly if the parents move far away from each other.
The best way to help your children after a divorce is to keep them close, especially if you do not have custody over them. Visit regularly and stay an important part of their life.
