What is the difference between a misdemeanor and a felony?

A felony charge is much more serious than a misdemeanor charge. A misdemeanor charge is punishable for a prison term up to a year long and fines are much less than they are for felony charges. Misdemeanors, although less serious than felony charges, will still be placed on your criminal record. Examples of misdemeanors are disorderly conduct, vandalism, petty theft, prostitution, and public intoxication. A felony charge usually results in a jail term of over one year and has much higher fines for your crime. Example of felonies include treason, rape, murder, robbery, and kidnapping.
