Marriage and Health
Many people are always looking for the “next big thing” in health. Antioxidants, raw food diets, and
whey protein supplements have all experienced waves of popularity. However, what about marriage? You
may not realize that marriage can have both positive and negative impacts on your health.
First, you have probably heard that being married increases the average life expectancy. This is because
a married person has someone else to take care of them when they are sick, to help pay for medical bills,
to exercise with them, etc. However, studies have shown that the gap in life expectancies between married
and unmarried people is closing. People are now more likely to take care of themselves, and it is also
harder to interpret the studies with all of the gray areas in relationships today — divorced, partnered
but not married, etc.
Next, according to studies, married people are typically healthier across the board. They suffer from
less physical health issues such as chronic back pain and headaches. Also, they tend to be safer from
psychological problems. Lastly, husbands and wives are less likely to drink excessively and usually
exercise more.
However, unmarried people tend to be healthier when it comes to weight. Married couples, on average,
weigh more than their single counterparts. Three out of four married men between the ages of 45 and
64 are overweight or obese. Contrastingly, people who have never married are the most in-shape, in terms
of weight.
Getting a divorce takes a toll on some people’s health. Studies have shown that divorced people are
up to 23% more likely to suffer from problems like chronic disease or mobility issues. However, it is
unarguable that unhappy marriages can cause extreme stress, which translates to health problems. Abusive
marriages and unions that cause anxiety and stress are worth dissolving, in terms of health issues.
While studies have shown that marriages can be beneficial for one's health, it is also not worth staying
in a marriage if you are suffering from mental, emotional, or physical abuse, or even the stress of
living with someone who makes you unhappy.
